Less likely to be outsourced if you’re a site engineer.

If you like being creative, go for home automation. This market is relatively tiny in comparison to network communications, but it has very strong growth potential. Since the components required for home automation are decreasing in price, more and more people are making the decision to upgrade their security system to a full blown home automation system. Your background should allow you to be very successful, since part of the trick is figuring out how to set up all the networks in the system (ie. video, computers, dist. audio, etc.). Bottom line to me is that you’ll make more of a difference to people by helping them automate their homes, than by working at the help desk. And if the company ever gets rid of the position, you’ll probably have enough knowledge and contacts to start your own business. Good luck, either way!

I believe help desks are going to be replaced by computers eventually. I would go for the site engineer position.
