Yes there is a tun of stuff you can do. First thing first is to have a 1 1/2 to 2in PVC pipe from your basement to the Attic. Access points at each lvl. Take pictures of your walls b4 you put up drywall. Have at least one Data point per room. Use the latest and greats cable for Data. And Plan for where you want your home theator. Use good cable for each run to the speakers. Dont go cheep here because next time you swap out speakers you will have good cable to handle the new technology.

For smart home stuff have access points to the front and garuage. To start after you have that you will have to decide what type of smart home stuff you will have at the house.

I install all this stuff for a living and the key item is that PVC pipe and the pictures of the walls b4 drywall is put up. Do thoes few things and your good to go.

    here are a few suggestion

    Background audio
Most system have an amp and source or source’s in one main room or closet. Then a volume control in each room them two speaker. If you pull a Cat5 wire to the volume control location you can run a multi source system like a Russound 6.6 system. I’d pull the cat5 just to keep my options open.

    Automation
Pull that cat5 to all the light switch’s in the home. again This will let you use just about any system out there for lighting control. However you don’t need to pull any cat 5 to the switch’s if you use Insteon controls from Smarthome. They use RF to control there system. It works pretty good. I have some of there stuff in my home.

    Wire to each room
spend the money right here. At lease Two cat5 and Two RG6 to each room and home run them… (No Dasie chains).

    Internet Access Points
Install a cat 5 wire over your hallways
This will allow you to install a wireless access point where it gives you the best range. You still have the cat5 in the rooms for a network… but the access points let you walk around with you lab top…. Cool

I like the idea about photos and the PVC idea. Take as many as you can and label your wires and photos.

there is a system that is sold by ON Q They sell them at Lowes home improvement it is called a whole house audio system and it is run off of Cat 5 wire and 16/2 audio lines they sell up to eight room systems and you have a volume control in each room it’s main hook up is to your receiver but the main out puts are from a local point where you would run the phone lines to but it hooks to different equipment in that box. You can also have the system set up that if you hook up other equipment in a different room then you can switch inputs in different rooms to that equipment And it works great just installed one at my house and brother-in-laws and three new homes
